Something inside me died on November 9, 2016. It was the death of apathy, but the birth of activism.
I retired from teaching/counseling in June, 2016, and moved from Kentucky to North Carolina. My dream of actively pursuing my interests became a realization. I could spend my days on the beach, volunteer for meals on wheels, read, craft, and just do the things I liked to do.
Then, in November, the unthinkable, the unimaginable happened. My life took a new path. I formed an Indivisible group, and became active in resisting this new administration by regularly contacting my representative and two senators (all Republicans), holding town halls, writing post cards, taking petitions to their offices (save our ACA!), attending marches, and becoming active in the political process.
I came back to Twitter after a five-year hiatus to become even more active and informed. The first resister I found was @PrincessBravato. She was my hero. I followed her and re-tweeted her. She was my first resistance touchstone.
I made it my business to educate myself about the local politics in North Carolina. I became active in the local Democratic Party, and learned about the widespread corruptness in the politicians and the system.
We (@KottiPillar, @GrootResists, @leiaresists) formed the group #NCResists on Twitter. Our mission is to EDUCATE the people about their rights, EXPOSE disparity/corruption, and SUPPORT our federal and state democratic candidates.
I will continue to resist, because our freedoms are being eroded more each day. I cannot, nor will not, tolerate it. I will speak truth to power, no matter the cost. I have taken to heart the words of Patrick Henry, “Give me liberty, or give me death!”
