I switched gears on Twitter in mid 2016. Trump’s campaign messaging had me reacting at max volume; the Pulse tragedy had me fighting with NRA zealots; I needed to take it off Facebook, and onto an anonymous Twitter account.
I chose a character from my favorite anime: Radical Edward, from Cowboy Bebop. Ed travels with a crew of space bounty hunters on the good ship Bebop, usually while fully immersed in the internet behind her VR goggles.
When I started resisting on Twitter, I was increasingly worried about Trump, but on the plus side, I was heartened to see so many Sci Fi geeks resisting. Fighting Trump and the GOP – while proudly owning geekhood – the Resistance became a daily inspiration.
I believe that the Resistance plays a critical role in countering the toxic disinformation being blasted out daily by this administration. We have so many dedicated, talented voices. I aim to do all I can to amplify.
My avi, Ed, loves “data, data, data”, and so do I: researching news, resources, legal developments, vetting candidates … I’m up for all of it.
When harrowing stories of separated families began to surface, I was devastated. Since then, I’ve been following and researching the impacts of Trump’s cruel immigration policies; and doing whatever I can to help the support organisations, attorneys, social workers, and many others on the front line fighting for immigrants.
I’m grateful for the groups who have welcomed me in, and all the support, learning, the projects we work on. I hope I give back as much as I gain! #HeroesPersist was the very first, and #GeeksResist the most recent, just yesterday … and love to all the wonderful groups I’ve joined in between!
