As with many Americans, over 65.8 million to be exact, Tuesday, November 9th, 2016 crashed my hopes of having the first woman President in the United States. While Clinton received 2.87 million more popular votes, a margin of 2.1%, she lost the election because of the archaic Electoral College.
I curled up in a ball on the floor that evening and didn’t move for about a week. Depression sucks.
Looking back, here are the facts as I know them:
- Hillary won the popular vote by 2.87 million votes, which mean Trump IS beatable.
- The propaganda spewed by the media that she was a flawed candidate was bullshit.
- Her campaign was torpedoed by a targeted, determined, and coordinated effort by the Trump campaign, a well-organized group of Russian actors and Conservative organizations bent on making the vilest person alive President of the United States.
So, here we are stuck with a moronic, low IQ, game show host who hates women, the poor, people with brown skin, and anyone else who does not conform to his Hitleresque idea of his kind of people. Today, we now know of the Trump crime family’s lying, cheating, stealing, conspiring, and colluding to do anything possible to enrich themselves. To put it bluntly, it’s all about the Trump brand name and money. But, we don’t know the entire story yet. There are a few more puzzle pieces to be filled in, and much more litigation to come before Trump is either removed or voted out. As of today, there are 541 days until the 2020 election.
I grew up as a Methodist missionary kid who traveled around the world, but was never comfortable in the formal structure of the organized church and raising massive amounts of money for support. My daddy broke my heart in the 80’s when he told me that HIV/AIDS was God’s punishment on those who sinned. Our relationship was never the same after that. My mission since then has been equal individual human rights for all, and holding politicians accountable with my own particular brand of snark-a-licous contempt for Conservatives and Right Wing Nut Jobs.
My liberal/progressive views were solidified in the late ’60s, and the early ’70s in Southern California at UCLA, where I was a full-time student getting my teaching certificate and part-time flower child. I later went on to teach high school civics and government classes, along with a periodic business class.
When Jon Stewart retired from The Daily Show, I was so moved by his final show monologue in which he called on us to not put up with the norm, and call bullshit on bullshit when we see it. That has been my mission ever since; to call B.S. on all Republican lies and hypocrisy whenever I see it and now, especially now, with the Trump Crime Family in the White House.
I believe in fundamental human rights for ALL. That includes the right to life-sustaining food and water for ALL; the right to free basic healthcare for ALL; the right to clean, pollution-free air for ALL; the right to free, safe shelter for ALL. And, EVERY woman has the absolute right to control their own bodies. Period, full stop. No debate here. That is NOT Communism. That’s just common sense.
The First Amendment of the Constitution, and every person’s Individual Rights is PARAMOUNT! The Right to Free Speech MUST include ALL speech, regardless of whether you agree with it or not. The Right to Religious Freedom MUST include every person’s right to worship ANY religion they wish. This also includes the Freedom FROM religion if one chooses. And, the Freedom of the Press – we were founded on the idea that the press is a crucial component to our Democracy that has a primary responsibility of holding the government and our leaders accountable.
